Because ultramarines are treated with sulfur, they could have a foul odor, the smell of “rotten egg”. The strength of this odor depends on the pH of the base of your product in which you will add your ultramarine. For example, if you bring your ultramarine to a more acidic environment below 6 on the pH scale, this will give off smelly sulfur fumes.
